Brief History of Dunya University

Dunya – the world.

A name was well chosen to reflect its positioning as the first university in Afghanistan with a distinctive international flavor, thanks to an international faculty hailing from Switzerland, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, the UK, and the USA. Their experience in delivering with the latest teaching methods, including discussions on their own experience and research, is unique in the country. Students are delighted to share this international vision. This reflects Dunya’s approach of blending theory and practices with contemporary case studies, enabling students to share in the creation of knowledge that can assist in the rebuilding of Afghanistan.

2005-2006

His Excellency General Ahmed Ali Sangdel – and several members of his family, as well as a team of devoted colleagues with extensive international educational experience, started an in-depth reflection on the creation of a university in Kabul.

2007:

Mr. Sangdel’s vision proved to lead to the creation of the Najat Foundation. In 2007, it offered a series of free courses in English, Information Technology and Mathematics,  through the Najat Foundation established in Kwai Markaz, which was a resounding success.

2008:

Planning sessions followed in Geneva, together with academics experienced in developing curricula for international institutions.

2009:

The authorization of establishing the Dunya Institute of Higher Education (DIHE) was received from the Ministry of Higher Education.

Success was immediate – with 360 candidates for the entrance examination, of which 180 students enrolled.

First conference with a participation of 5 professors, one from Brazil, two from Switzerland, one from Singapore and a Dutch.

2011:

Dunya University became a member of the ACBSP accreditation body.

2013:

DIHE became Dunya University of Afghanistan.

The first graduation ceremony was held in the Loya Jirga with the participation of well over 5000 persons and national personalities.

President Hamid Karzai called directly during the ceremony to congratulate graduating students.

2016:

Dunya University has now introduced a TV educational package (Dunya At Your Home) into our academic programs. This package, engineered by Prof. Djawed Sangdel, affords every citizen of Afghanistan and beyond to gain access to education at a very affordable cost. This means those living in the remotest areas of the country can have access to the program through television, with or without internet, and with all teaching materials including videos, audio and texts.

2017:

While a member of ACBSP since 2011, Dunya University received full accreditation for its faculty of management science, and more specifically for its bachelor and master program as the first and only accredited member.

2020

Today, Dunya University has 4 faculties – Management, Law, Political Science and Computer Science. Management courses range from Bachelors to Masters level. Classes are held on two new campuses – in Darul Aman and Shah-re-now.

Dunya University also holds major national and international seminars, a unique accomplishment in Afghanistan, attended by leading figures such as President Ashraf Ghani, ambassadors, ministers, and senior leaders.
