Dunya Opening

In May 2009, the University of Management, Economics and Finance (UMEF) held its first international conference in Geneva, Switzerland on the opening of the Dunya Institute for Higher Education (DIHE) in Kabul, Afghanistan. The second international conference was held in Hamburg, Germany on 27 June 2009. The main subjects addressed at both conferences were the major achievement of getting an establishment of higher learning up and running and providing high-quality education to Master’s level in a country badly in need of this type of help, and the cooperation and assistance of the Government and citizens of Afghanistan.

The first day of the Hamburg conference was dedicated to orientation and introduction of guests and the showing of the film of the Geneva conference.

The second day was given over to speeches by the visiting guests of honour and various dignitaries. The President of UMEF, Djawed Sangdel, who is also the founder of DIHE in Kabul, talked about the history behind the new establishment, its teaching methods and its activities.

Assadullah Habib announced in his address: “I am very happy to count myself among the honourable professors and intellectuals of our country.” He went on to say that he considered the establishment of DIHE to be very valuable for the future of Afghanistan and later took questions from participants. UMEF was honoured to have contributions from the following guests:

In conclusion, Djawed Sangdel expressed his thanks to everyone who had taken part and contributed to making the two days such a success. He said that: “This has been an excellent conference, and extremely worthwhile, and the next generation is coming through right behind us, giving us a perfect opportunity to provide a platform for their future, giving them access to the reservoir of knowledge contained in the experiences of the country’s intellectuals. The DIHE is an institution set up to respect the traditions of the past while building a bridge to the future.”
